Lobby Chat Access Fix

Problem

The Lobby Chat Service was being disabled for all users instead of just players who aren’t members of any group.

Root Cause

The issue was a timing problem where the UI was rendering before the user data (groups and admin status) was fully loaded. The component was evaluating the condition _userGroups?.Any() == true || _isAdmin before _userGroups was populated from the database.

Solution

Added proper async data loading with a loading state to ensure the UI waits for user data to be loaded before evaluating chat access conditions.

Changes Made

Technical Details

Before Fix

  1. UI renders immediately on component initialization
  2. _userGroups is null initially
  3. Condition _userGroups?.Any() == true || _isAdmin evaluates to false for everyone
  4. All users see “Chat Access Required” message

After Fix

  1. UI shows “Loading chat…” initially
  2. LoadUserData() completes asynchronously
  3. _dataLoaded flag is set to true
  4. UI re-evaluates conditions with loaded data
  5. Proper access determination based on actual group membership and admin status

Expected Behavior

Users WITH Group Membership

  • See: Full chat interface with message history and input
  • Can: Send and receive chat messages
  • Can: Clear their personal chat history
  • Admins: Can toggle broadcast mode

Users WITHOUT Group Membership

  • See: “Chat Access Required” message with instructions
  • Cannot: Send chat messages (blocked with alert)
  • Can: View chat if they’re admins (admin override)
  • Should: Contact administrator to be added to a group

Admins

  • Always have access regardless of group membership
  • Can broadcast to all logged-in players
  • Can moderate chat functionality

Testing Checklist
